THE PREMISE
Four unique stages. One rider. One bike. One set of tires. It’s pretty simple really. The Queens is a four day mountain bike adventure designed to test every skill and twitch every muscle in a rider’s arsenal in an attempt to crown the best overall riders around.
DATES:
Thursday-Sunday
July 8th-11th, 2010
BIKE DOPING:
All bikes will be weighed before the first stage. As well, tires will be documented. During each stage their will be random bike doping where we will pull you into the doping tent and confirm that your bike is CLEAN. The penalty for any doping offense will be extreme (just ask Big Al). The spirit of this event is your bike is your bike for the duration. So when it comes to tire selection, “choose well”.
CATEGORIES:
There will be Open Men’s and Open Women’s categories. Juniors are welcome to participate but they will have to compete in the open categories.
COSTS:
The fost of the Four Queens is $80 if you have a bike park pass and $90 if you don’t. Your entry fee includes:
- A Four Queens jersey
- A celebration BBQ with refreshments
- Toonie Ride entry
- 1up bike park lift ticket (if needed)
- $5 Bicycles for Humanity donation
- $10 donation to the Pemberton Valley Trails Association
- and, sadly, a hefty service fee to the online registration company
VOLUNTEERING:
If you would like to volunteer for any of the stages (or all of them!), please email race@worca.com.
THANKS:
A huge shout out to our event partners:
- SRAM
- Whistler Blackcomb
- Chromag
- The Bike Co.
- And to the queen of the Whistler art scene, Vanessa Stark, for designing the Queen Cards
STAGES:
Slope Side Supply/Samurai Sushi “Freddie Mercury Memorial” Time Trial
STAGE I - Thursday, July 8th
6:00pm
He loved to ride his bicycle, he loved to ride his bike. The Freddie Mercury Memorial Time Trail kicks off the Queens in high style. Biting the dust here could end any GC aspirations. Clocking in at just over 10km of classic Westside, this roller coaster of a ride will leave you breathless but wanting more. Just the way Freddie would have wanted it. Run in combination with the weekly Toonie, this will also be a fundraiser for Bicycles for Humanity. And in honour of Freddie, we ask all riders to please come dressed in your finest moustache (real or otherwise). No moustache, no ride. Come ready because we will rock you!
Her Majesty: The Queen of Hearts
SRAM “Off with their Heads!” Downhill
STAGE II - Friday, July 9th
5:oopm
Oh what a nasty queen. Back to the bike park for a full-on descent from the top of Garbo that pushes the one bike, one set of tires rule to the limit. With 15 minutes of technicolour descending straight from the mind of our Queen, Sylvie Allen, you probably will not need to visit the caterpillar beforehand. The ride itself will blur reality and fill your mind with hatters, rabbits, and groovy cats. And remember, don’t be an Alice or you will lose your head!
Rupaul: Queen of Diamonds
Chromag Super D-Rag Double Shot
Stage III - Saturday, July 10th
10:00am Morning Start, 2:00pm Afternoon Start
We know, it’s a bit of a drag but we’re back in the dreaded No Flow Zone for the first half of the Chromag Double Shot. Shorter than last year with more emphasis on the technical features, should separate the drag queens from the real McCoys. And perhaps finally answer the question, what does Matt Ryan have hiding under that spandex (and we’re not talking about Tony Routley’s shammy)? After the quick jaunt through Emerald, we are headed North for the PHD Super D. This will literally be a drag race starting at the upper exit and combining two quick road climbs with some super cherry descending. But beware: PHD will test your tire choice to the max if you go light. And getting a flat is a real drag. The results will be combined into one for the overall, however, this is a special stage so we will also be crowning the Chromag Drag Queens at the finish.
Lady Macbeth: Queen of Spades
The Bike Co. “Pemberton Tragedy”
Stage IV - Sunday, July 11th
1:00pm
Betrayal. Deception. Death. Remorse. This one has it all. How will you feel after the Queen stage of the Queens? Perhaps you’ll also need a dagger. This year, we are continuing up the road to hit the great trails of Pemberton for a classic up-down-athon to crown the overall champs. And what better way to follow up a tragedy than with a celebration (complete with a J. Hine soliloquy). Watch out for the witches.
