Toonie Ride - August 12th

If you haven’t had a chance to ride the Bike Park, this is your opportunity. Once the frantic pace of Kokanee Crankworx winds down, the Bike Park gets better by the week-especially once the fall moisture arrives and the temps drop. In addition the Bike Park crew have been hard at work over the last few years building new types of trails designed with all mountain (5*5 and 6*6 inch) bikes in mind. Trails like Karate Monkey, Ninja Cougar, Samurai Pizza Cat and Crank it Up in the lower mountain and the newly completed Blue Velvet trail in the Garbanzo zone have had rave reviews. So here’s your opportunity to give the Bike Park a Sample…but don’t miss out, check in early on Aug 12th!

Be sure to get your Meal and Beer tickets at the sign on, as well as your ballot for the 5th Annual Show and Shine.

The Show and Shine began somewhat impromptu after Chromag’s Toonie ride five years back. All the Chromag owners wiped the fresh dirt off their bikes and displayed them all together to simply admire their bikes. Most Toonie riders have a competitive spirit so this bonding of Chromag bikes had to have a winner. It was decided that the “Best in Show” would be up to all those gathered to decide by way of a majority vote.

The Chromag Show and Shine has blossomed into a great event and Chromag bike owners have gone to great lengths in preparing their bikes for display. Some displays have included music, enclosed crates with peep holes, electric lights, and many props to embellish the theme of the Bicycle. Anything goes – custom paint, vote soliciting, the only rule is that it must be a Chromag Frame. All those present at the event get one vote so it’s important to make sure that you check out all the Chromags on display.

Make sure you get your Show and Shine ballot at the sign on. If you are a Chromag owner wishing to show and shine your bike, you can obtain a registration card at the après and a showing space from Chromag Bikes.

These are the good times, and we are havin’them! See you there!

**Trail Notice

Tunnel Vision Trees Thinned to Reduce Wildfire Risk

Watch during this week’s Loonie for the recently-thinned section near the bottom of Tunnel Vision, next to Kadenwood Road. Smaller trees were cut and removed from the site, then shipped to the composting facility. With the addition of thinning on either side of the Kadenwood ski-out, 750 metric tonnes (150 huge truckloads) of brush were removed, a total which represents six week’s supply for the composting process.

Much of the lower valley in Whistler has similar forests to those around Tunnel Vision. These 40-60 year-old, extremely dense and dark stands are targetted for “fuels reduction,” that is, cutting and removal of smaller trees to reduce the flammability of the stand. Such treatments can also provide better wildlife habitat by speeding the development of mature and older stand conditions.

Comments and suggestions about this and future wildfire treatments are welcome. Please contact Fire Chief Rob Whitton (rwhitton@whistler.ca).
