Trails Update: August 22, 2025

Going far? Not really.

Our tools have embarked on another “long” trip this week: check out this popular route. Although our ultimate mission is to renovate the (Comfortably Numb) Land of Confusion segment which leads to Bring on the Weekend, we have a hard time ignoring spot repairs along the way. We didn’t get very far before we encountered some projects scheduled for 2026 that needed to bump up the priority queue. First, we added a railing to the high climbing bridge near the start of Yummy Numby 2.0 (the original line was on the golf cart track). That slippery bridge’s fall hazard was substantial so we “played carpenter” to retro-fit appropriate railings. Climbing further, Yummy Numby was showing its age… as the trail erodes over time due to weather/tires/etc., rocks and roots tend to stand “taller.” This makes the tread generally more challenging. Most riders, regardless of ability, naturally navigate their bikes to avoid the momentum-killing taller obstacles. When a critical mass of riders dodges the same obstacle, it leads to what we call “trail creep” (widening). We sometimes “choke” the trail to block the creepers or try to make the original line more inviting again (if appropriate). We armoured plenty of root steps on our way up Yummy Numby this week, with a few more projects to go before pushing the tools towards the Golden Door. I’m looking forward to testing this refreshed climb!

EMERGENCY tree shoutout!

Zander informed me of a complex “widow maker” cluster over Cultured Climb earlier this week. A widow maker can be a tasty IPA or in this case, a broken tree top posing an overhead threat. With 2 enduro events using the trail this weekend, this was a priority. Upon investigation, I realized that dealing with this tree situation was beyond the scope of the trail crew’s training and equipment… we needed help from professionals, ASAP! I reached out to Andrew at Silverback Treeworks and they came through on short notice! Michal and I supported Brian Fishbook as he expertly deconstructed the mess of leaning trees. Brian shared his approach and technique with us which made the situation a great learning experience. The most important lesson of all - Call the experts!

Wedge creek bridge update

We were informed last week that construction of the new Al Grey Memorial Bridge (Comfortably Numb) has met some challenges, delaying completion (and re-opening of the trail) to the end of September. Please stay away from the worksite and obey all signage until the grand “re-opening.”

See you on the Trails!
