Trails Update: August 15, 2025
little stuff
After some vegetation control in the wedge zone, we made our way back to Alpine Meadows to make a few “tweaks” to the Witsend/Hillman secret stage (Mandatory!). The race will be using the right side line, NOT slabs and chute. We made some small changes like rounding a few turns and enhancing grade reversals. We cut eye poking branches, armoured some holes and smashed a few pedal catchers too. We also patched a few wet spots up above on the hike-a-bike free approach. Check out course details here. Why not sign up for the event while you’re there…
map nerds unite!
I start most days eating breakfast at my computer, ogling maps. I’m studying wildfire thinning plans, solving missing network connections, imagining epic new experiences or planning rides for my next vacation. It felt serendipitous for Trailforks to join us to dig on the “Danimal South Blue Bypass”. These guys, especially Trevor (trailforks founder) take map nerding to another level! This project has been a long, hard exercise in network optimization to fit this important missing link through cliffy terrain that is already peppered with other trails. I’ve pondered this area over many bowls of cereal since we completed the Chipmunk Rebellion (2020).
“That name won’t fit on the map for such a short segment”. Well, it does merge seamlessly with Rock Rabbit…
The Trailforks team, paired with some of our regular dig event volunteers made some great progress “de-duffing” (removing the organic layers) creating a nice natural “S-turn” line. We omitted any finishing work for later (after some rain) and loaded up on watermelon and Sarah’s prosciutto sandwiches. Cold Coast Mountain Brewing suds helped beat the heat before heading to the village to take in some crankworx action. We’ll return to “Stretch the Rock Rabbit” after Labour day!
trail reports
While on the subject of Traiforks: The whistler reports page has been stacking up on deadfall posts while I was up north, so we spent a few days clearing trails. A pair of trees had fallen onto a bridge near the train wreck. I believe Dave Fortier and Chris Markle built that feature. It survived the impact with only a handful of pieces of decking needing repair. I dispatched Michal and Josh to a huge day of riding with chainsaws (not recommended). They managed to clear all of Comfortably Numb, White Knuckles and the Rainbow Flank.
See you on the Trails!
