Trails Update: April 24, 2026

Unplanned Repairs

There are always some “leftover” projects from the previous season that dominate the trail crew’s spring schedule. Those projects ended up in the leftover pile because they weren’t so pressing, but they do occupy some of my “mental space” so I look forward to crossing them off at the start of the season.

A pattern does emerge though… more “urgent” projects bumped them to “we’ll deal with this later this season…” and I found myself in that pattern again this week. Winter atmospheric rivers overwhelmed culverts and toppled trailside trees, ripping trail tread apart. We shifted our work to the access for Young Lust and the NEW Al Grey suspension bridge. We put in a full team effort rebuilding 5 metres of an old forestry service road and clearing deadfall. We also managed to fill a few holes and armour some transitions. “Did you cut down that finger smashing choke point between the alders?...” No we didn’t. We elevated the tread so that the handle bar squiggle is more reasonable. We were “under gunned” to deal with the huge trees on the south side of the suspension bridge so clearing those is moving to the top of next week’s priority list. The 2025 leftovers will get pushed back yet again…

We also rushed out to repair rootball damage on Scotia Nova and Cheap Thrills. Please keep sharing what you see on the trails to trailforks (photos please!).

Deep Trail Night Rakes (and ride!)

We kicked off the 2026 volunteer trail nights with a push to reclaim sections of trail impacted by last year’s forest thinning through lower Beaver Pass. We were again presented with an opportunity to optimize the network value of the trails in this area: Beaver Pass would get modernized to a more downhill trending line and Hot Dog Pass could be redesigned into a well needed low elevation blue trail.

We put this week’s volunteers to the latter task. Wide swooping turns took shape and pesky stumps were pulled before darkness and the mosquitoes descended. Thanks to Peak Vending and Coast Mountain Brewing for supporting this event! Next week, we’ll be doing some finishing work and adding some 3D shapes (jumps and berms) to this flowy westside alternative. PLEASE sign up here (so that we can ensure enough tools and candy).

See you on the Trails!
