Red Bull 5000 Down - Call for Vollies Sept 11-12th

For a second year, Red Bull 5000 Down hits Whistler Blackcomb with a mass start downhill mountain bike race. On September 11th and 12th, mountain bikers will gather at the peak of Whistler Mountain, at Whistler Blackcomb Resort in British Columbia and will descend more than 2,182 metres (7,159 feet) and a vertical of 1,530 metres (5,020 feet) in order to cross the finish line in the Whistler Village. All riders will need to sustain constant physical and mental effort to maintain control during the entire descent, which will take approximately 20 minutes for the fastest participants.

Red Bull 5000 Down features 250 men and women starting simultaneously from the snow-capped peak of Whistler Mountain. Fly down past the Roundhouse Lodge, riders will enter the world-famous Whistler Mountain Bike Park at the top of the Garbanzo Express chairlift, before riding the Park’s giant slalom course and then finally crossing the finish line in Whistler Village. Over the course of two days, participants will be challenged by bar-to- bar racing as they battle side-by-side, dealing with fatigue and navigating through dirt trails riddled with jumps, stunts, drops and root-strewn terrain.

The event will draw some of the greatest North American and European riders to Whistler Blackcomb. Among the riders will be a combination of the sport’s emerging and established superstars, including 2008 World Champions Gee Atherton and Rachel Atherton, Red Bull Rampage 2009 winner Brandon Semenuk, Stevie Smith, Darren Berrecloth, Matti Lehikoinen and Filip Polc. The top five men will share a cash purse of $9,500 and the top three women will share $3,500.

EVENT INFORMATION:

Put together by Richie Schley one of the world’s most respected Free-Riders and Grant Lamont who has helped put Whistler on the map as one of the best riding destinations on the globe, it promises to be something special. Space will be limited to 150 Riders with the person with the lowest accumulated time over the 3 timed trails declared the winner in 3 Categories Open Men/Women, Masters Men/Women(over 40) and Juniors(under 19). The profits from this event will go to the Whistler Off Road Cycling Association trail maintenance program along with providing ibuprofen money for these to old trail horses.

Rider’s will be faced with over 7,000 ft of all mountain riding off of the Flank Trail with huge rock faces, lush loamy single-track and some of the best flow on the planet. We almost wanted to call it Flankworx but our friends at WB think that this is a cool idea. All riders must access the 3 timed trails by climbing up to them so the choice of bikes will be key. None of the uphill sections will be timed but all riders will have a minimum time to reach the top of each trail for their allotted start time. The competition promises to be tough with all Richie’s DH and All Mountain bro’s taking on the local strongmen and women. We expect to see some of the World’s Best to compete as they are here for Crankworx and with this event on the Saturday before the Slopestyle we anticipate tons of fun and spirited competition.

The key to this event will be a solid all around riders who has the fitness for the climbs and the courage and skill on the descent.

The wrap up and awards presentation will take place at the Whistler Brewery where we will have the opportunity to try some fresh product and appetizers and view some of the great footage and imagery that will be happening during the day.

Course Announced for Ken Quon RE/MAX Corridor Cup

Organizers of the Ken Quon RE/MAX Corridor Cup have announced the 2010 race course that will be used for the Ken Quon RE/MAX Corridor Cup and the BC Cup XC Mountain Bike finals. While using the highlights of previous years, it adds new sections in the Lost Lake Park that add even more challenging single track.

All proceeds from the race go to the purchase of emergency equipment for the corridor. Over the past number of years the race has raised over $30,000 and has purchased medical and fire rescue equipment.

Race day is August 8th and will include the Ken Quon RE/MAX Corridor Cup team event where two riders racing in the BC Cup level race combine their times to claim the fastest pair in the Sea-to-Sky Corridor. Pump Track Challenge Results

Dylan Wolski and Nick Geddes (photo courtesy of Brian Finestone)

Sunday brought out 23 riders to the Whistler Bike Park Pump Track Challenge. This was an all ages event with riders ranging in age from 7 and up. Riders were given 1.5 hours to ride as many laps as they wanted. Each lap was timed and the goal was to better the fastest time of the day and their own personal best. After the allotted time, 5 bikers had broken the 15 second mark and moved on to the finals.

Nick Geddes was holding the fasted time of the day at 14:26 but decided to waive that time and start the finals with fresh times. The finalists were given 10 minutes to post the best time and after 4 runs each we came out with a tie of 14:41 between Dylan Wolsky and Nick Geddes. This forced a tie breaker in a winner takes all best of 3 runs ultimate final. The fist run went to Dylan but Nick took the next two and the title of Pump Track Champion. Nick also wins entry into the ladders at Crankworx’s fist Ultimate Pump Track Challenge.

In other Categories, Addison MacDonald led the Groms (13 and under) with a time of 15:98 and Zander Geddes took top spot in the Juniors (14-17) with a time of 15:11. Also winning a place in Crankworx, top female of the day was Rebecca McQueen with a time of 16:94.

Some of the draw prizes handed out at the awards at the GLC were a Sram drive train, Kali Helmets and t-shirts, Maxxis tires, Race Face handlebars and many other prizes from Odi, Dakine, Garbanzo Bike and Bean, the GLC and Kokanee.

Crud to Mud Downhill - Saturday May 22nd

Few places can rival what Whistler has in store for mountain bikers this season. And after much demand, the Whistler Mountain Bike Park is excited to be bringing back the Crud 2 Mud Downhill on May 22, 2010.

In teams or individually, Crud to Mud competitors ski or snowboard from the top of Whistler Mountain to the bottom of the snow line, where their bikes and equipment lay waiting. Once they’ve struggled out of their boots and are clipped into their bike pedals, participants race through the Whistler Mountain Bike Park on a yet to be determined trail.

“The Crud to Mud is the only race that solves the spring-time dilemma of making the choice to ride or ski - it allows you to do both”, exclaims Rob McSkimming, Whistler Blackcomb VP Business Development. “So many people in Whistler are accomplished at both sports why not try to determine who is best?”

Check out full event details here.

Registration: Registration for the Crud to Mud Downhill is still open and is available through Whistler Blackcomb Guest Reservations or 1.800.766.0449.

The event is $45 or $55 for teams of two.

Whistler Mountain Bike park lift tickets are not included in the registration cost, but can be purchased for $26 (Adults)/$23 (Youth/Senior) at Guest Relations.

Mandatory Racer Mtg: Due to the nature of the event and the ever-changing snow conditions there will be a mandatory meeting for all participants @ the Garibaldi Lift Company on Friday, May 21 at 6pm. At that time the event format will be discussed and the courses will be announced.

Volunteers Needed! Please contact Seb at sfremont@intrawest.com if interested.
