We have been dreaming of this for years - now it’s time to come do your part to fulfill your high alpine dream!
WORCA is calling upon all its members to lend a hand, especially if you have not been out yet for a trail day this season.
If 1000 members come out and only cut 3 m of trail each, we have 3 km of riding. This would only take a small amount of your time and our dream could come true.
Trail Days: September 24 & 25, October 2 & 9
Location: Bottom of Stonebridge Rd
Time: 8am - you may leave whenever you must but please try and stay for at least 4 hours. We will be there all day.
If the Volley days above don’t work for you, please contact Dave or Jerome via trails@worca.com . Leave a phone number, you and you crew can join on any other day we are working. Period to help is Sept. 20th to Oct 17th.
In advance we want to also thank Whistler Outback Adventures and Bear Back Biking for co-sponsoring this project and these trail days.
What to bring:
- long pants and long sleeves is advised
- work gloves
- water
- lunch
- tools if you have them as we only have so many: picks, pulaskis, hand saws, garden shears, Hand Pruners (if you have none, WORCA has some tools available)
- Bug spray
If you come by bike you will need to stash it in the woods as you won’t want to take it with you all the way. Please bring a lock.
We challenge you all to come out and be a part of the experience.

Tunnel Vision Trees Thinned to Reduce Wildfire Risk
Watch during this week’s Loonie for the recently-thinned section near the bottom of Tunnel Vision, next to Kadenwood Road. Smaller trees were cut and removed from the site, then shipped to the composting facility. With the addition of thinning on either side of the Kadenwood ski-out, 750 metric tonnes (150 huge truckloads) of brush were removed, a total which represents six week’s supply for the composting process.
Much of the lower valley in Whistler has similar forests to those around Tunnel Vision. These 40-60 year-old, extremely dense and dark stands are targetted for “fuels reduction,” that is, cutting and removal of smaller trees to reduce the flammability of the stand. Such treatments can also provide better wildlife habitat by speeding the development of mature and older stand conditions.
Comments and suggestions about this and future wildfire treatments are welcome. Please contact Fire Chief Rob Whitton (
rwhitton@whistler.ca).

Big thank you for the all the volunteers who contributed to last Saturday’s trail day. It was a HUGE DAY!
Thanks to all your hard work, there is no more highway crossing to get into Train Wreck. The new access is from the original trailhead of the old highway and is easily accessible from Miller Creek Cafe. Some grassy spots need riding in, so hit it!
Next Trail day is sponsored by Dirt Series July 3rd
Meet in front of the Lost Lake Lodge in the upper village at 9:00 AM.
Also, thank you to Bear Back Biking crew who worked in Get Over It! and to Ticket2Ride for coming out strong at the Volley days.

This Saturday is International Trail Day! Come out and show your support
Ticket 2 Ride is sponsoring this week’s maintenance session.
Meet at 9:00 am, on June 5th, between the Muni Yard and the bus depot entrance of Area 56.
We will have 2 groups this week. One will work on a last connection in Area 56 (to avoid having to do all of Roll Yer Bones in order to get through to the power lines). The other group will head south to complete the rebuild of the eroded climb in Trash.
Come prepared with working gloves and water. Mosquitos will likely be out joining us so wear a long sleeve shirt and pants. Ticket2Ride will supply beverages and snacks. See you there!

Big Thank to Bear Back Biking for supplying great sandwiches and beverages on Saturday’s Trail Day.
Also big thanks to all the volunteer that came out to build the new connection.
Area 56, the trail named by Mr Richer’s grade 5 and 6 from Myrtle Phillips School has been completed.
The start is just past the Muni. yard entrance on the left. This will allow easy access to Roll Yer Bones and cut Yer Bars from Spruce Grove, also quick way to get over to Whistler Kay or visa versa.
Next Trail Day is June 5th, which is conveniently also International Trails Day.
This week is sponsored by Ticket2Ride.
Meeting time will be 9:00 AM, location tba although we will probably be at the south end of town.

Re-posted from the Bike Co website.
Thanks Pete for the heads up.
The Forest Service is moving to deactivate more roads in the Spruce Lake area, which will shut down trails like the Paradise Creek-Castle Pass-Tyaughton Creek loop. In typical fashion the public has been given a whole week to comment. Below is the Ministry’s Information Bulletin:
The Province has been moving to close access to the backcountry across the board. These closures may make sense from the limited perspective of the Forest Ministry – hey, no logging going on, close the road – but they can have wide ranging effects on other sectors of society, namely individual backcountry users and commercial backcountry operators. Make your voice heard!

Last Saturday, 26 students grade 5 & 6 students from Myrtle Phillips, and their instructor Mr. Richer, came out to clear and start cutting in a new connection trail into Cut Yer Bars from the Muni Yard access. The new trail has been christened Area 56 by the students.
This coming Saturday, we are going to continue their hard work and hopefully finish the project.
Our next trail day is:
Saturday, May 22nd
Sponsored by Bear Back Biking
Meet at 9am, at the access road to the Municipal Yard next to the bus depot (across the hwy from Spruce Grove).
Please bring work gloves, gardening shears, small saws, or any portable cutting tool you may have.
We’re still looking for sponsors for our trail days. Please send an email to trails@worca.com if interested.

As part of efforts to reduce the risk of wildfires in Whistler, the RMOW will be thinning forests in the Kadenwood area. Thinning will start after Thanksgiving and end when snow precludes further activity.
The portion of Tunnel Vision closest to Kadenwood will be closed for short periods to allow thinning. A detour via Millar’s Pond will remain open. The upper portion of the trail between the Khyber/Babylon By Bike area and Alpha Creek uphill of Millar’s Pond will not be affected.
For further information or current conditions, please contact Bob Brett (bob@snowlineresearch.ca; 604-905-9457).

Just a warning to all riders heading to Emerald Forest. One of our members was stung today ~10 times by wasps.
Take care when entering/exiting Emerald Forest off the paved trail that connects the Valley Trail (near Meadow Park) to West Side Road. Approximately 10m up the trail there is an option to go left and downhill or right and somewhat uphill towards West Side Road. At this intersection there is at least one wasp nest. Riders beware!

As you may have read, the PVTA has received funding for a major expansion of the local Pemberton trail network, with major XC routes climbing into the Owl Creek drainage and beyond. We’re happy to announce the completion of the first leg of this new trail network – Big NIMBY and Let It Go. If you like to climb, these are for you.
Big NIMBY completes the Happy Trail climb, and breaks down like this: The Happy Trail climbs 1.6 km up from the valley floor to the Waco Connector, which climbs for another 1.8 km to the McKenzie Forest Service Road. About 100 feet before the road, Big NIMBY branches off to the left for another 5.6 km of single track climbing, right up to Overnight Sensation. That’s 10 km of single track climbing over about 1700 vertical feet.
Read the full report and check out the route map on the Bike Co website.

Team Whistler Cycling has partnered with Whistler Olympic Park to host the first Mountain Bike race at the site of the 2010 Nordic skiing events on Sunday, July 19th. Taking advantage of the newly constructed ski trails as a base for course design, the crew at the Park and a number of trained volunteers have added large sections of single track to make for a race course to be remembered.
There are three different events being held:
· BC Cup #4 for licensed riders
· A Citizens’ Race (fun event for non-licensed riders)
· A kids’ biathlon race (supported by ActNowBC)
After riding the course with staff from Cycling BC, Todd Allison, Race Director said that “the course would challenge all. Roadies will excel at the initial climb to the top of the ski jumps on the existing Olympic Cross Country ski trail but then the technical riders will hold the upper hand when they jump back into the tougher sections including the steep single track beside the Olympic Ski Jump”. This section has been provisionally named “K-110”, comparing it to the ski jump landing. The course offers a balance of fast climbs and places to pass on the ski trails combined with challenging single track and one fast ski trail downhill.
The course is a challenging eight kilometre laps of an Olympic Mountain Bike style course. While many riders prefer marathon style races to Olympic style, this course will not disappoint. The terrain is varied and will be challenging for all types of riders. Team Whistler rider Mike Boehm described the single track section riding down to Madelay Creek as “classic Whistler riding” – adding that it will be awesome.
These trails will form part of an important legacy for the Sea-to-Sky community and we expect that this race will become a feature of the BC Cup series in the coming years.
Further information can be found on www.teamwhistler.ca and for the kids’ race, go to www.actnowbc.ca/events. Registration is open at www.karelo.com.

Last Saturday’s trail day was another success! With 12 hard-working volunteers, we made incredible progress on our project. A huge thank you goes out to all our volunteers (many of whom are putting in multiple days) and to the Ticket 2 Ride crew who put in 2 days last week and plan to do another 2 this coming week.
Next Trail Day: Saturday, June 20th
Time: 3 pm to 6pm
Location: The pullout across from Trudy’s Landing
Please bring a long sleeve shirt and gardening gloves. Cold bevvies will be supplied.
We are aware that many people aren’t able to make it out to the Saturday Trail Days and we’d love to give more members the opportunity to participate. If the organized days don’t fit your schedule, we’d like to invite you to join WORCA’s trail builder, Dave Fortier, during the week (groups of max 2-4). Please contact Jerome on our online contact form for details. If half our our members put in just a couple of hours, imagine how many projects could get completed!

With a Chilcotins bike trip being an annual excursion for many local riders, there is no doubt a lot of concern about how the Tyaughton Fire is affecting the trails in the Spruce Lake area. The Whistler Bike posted an update as of June 15th at www.bikeco.ca:
“The trails have not been affected by the fire, and the situation on the west flank of the fire has now stablized enough that the evacuation order has been lifted for the Gun Creek Road, Tyaughton Lake and Mud Creek areas. This means we can once again access the trail heads at Taylor Creek and Jewel Creek, which is good news. It is important to note that an evacuation alert remains for these areas, which means there is a risk the fire could blow back to life with the right winds and the evacuation order could be reinstated at any time…” Read the full article here.
