Trails Update: May 30, 2025
chasing the snow
After completing another short bypass to eliminate some unpleasant pedaling, we reached the (top) Pura Vida sign. So, as planned, our tools continued up Mount Sproatt. There were a few holes to deal with in the upper Chipmunk Rebellion but those were a small sidequest on our main mission: re-blueifying the LESS>LOTS loop. Although the Full Lord Of The Squirrels trail officially opened in 2017, the lower section was built (and ridden) 11 years ago. Popularity has aged the trail - the smooth brown tread has been beaten by thousands of tires through drought and downpour. Now, our rockwork and bumpy roots have been uncovered… rattling your bones. We’ve begun re-arranging the rocks and re-covering the roots to take off some of the “edge” and perhaps save your hands so that you can enjoy the rest of your descent to our favorite post ride beverage spot. FYI - It will be at least 2 weeks before the snow melts enough to ride through LESS!
whistler adventure school 2025
I’ve got a new cohort of students in the Sustainable Trail Building class. This spring, we’ve been bouncing the field work all over the valley: Line selection and benching happened on It’s Business Time, rockwork practice took place on Delineator and trail finishing was done on Cut Yer Roots. All three projects are still “works in progress” that will be continued by the Fall class and/or volunteer events. Stay tuned (below)…
wedge trail night
This week, Big Mountain Adventures sponsored our school night digging session. It was time to spread the trail night opportunities to other neighbourhoods and meet some new friends! We headed to the Wedge zone where volunteers helped complete Tim Haggerty’s vision - bench and widen Low Expectations to meet Adaptive-MTB black standard. The upgrades also serve up a much needed less technical line in this otherwise advanced-feature dominated riding area. Tim and his associates will keep “picking away” at this project as tires age the softer sections.
Next week, WORCA members are invited to join us on Delineator to complete the steep climb bypass started by the Whistler Secondary School Outdoor Leadership Program students. We’ll be benching and capping a more appropriate climbing grade at the Alpine Meadows’ end of the trail. Sign up HERE!
See you on the Trails!
