Executive Director's 2025 Summary and Infographic
Dear WORCA members,
2025 was a year of mixed results for WORCA. Firstly, the good news was that we had 100% return staff for our trail crew. This resulted in a lot of high-quality work on the trails throughout the year from our dedicated and experienced crew. We focused all efforts on trail maintenance in 2025, whereas the previous year additionally had a lot of new trail construction to complete the Flashback project. This meant that overall, we spent a lot less on trail work ($296K compared with $364K) and had less trail crew hours. This also reflects the fact that we received less revenue from memberships and donations this year.
Registration numbers for our Dirt Camps decreased again, from 154 last year to 79 in 2025. We reduced our costs as much as possible so that we were able to break even. The lower numbers meant that we did not need a program coordinator as well as a manager, and Sam White decided to step down from her role to allow Josh Thomson to step up from the coordinator role to become the new manager. Thank you, Sam, for the 7 years that you led WORCA Dirt Camps through many changes that resulted in a huge number of kids discovering or increasing their love of mountain biking!
Feedback continued to be very positive for the WORCA Dirt Camps in 2025, thanks to our great coaches, and we will be running these camps again in 2026. We will be looking at ways to increase registration numbers to be able to deliver the program more effectively.
We continued to run great community events in 2025 and added the Hillman open enduro to the Witsend weekend. We are already working on ways to make these events appeal to a wider range of participants for 2026.
Total registrations for Toonie Rides decreased due to less events because there were less sponsors available. We also sold out for several Toonie Rides due to the après capacity that is determined by the venue or what each sponsor can provide. We already have plans in place that will allow us to increase the number of people that can participate in Toonie Rides in 2026, knowing that there is very strong demand for these community rides.
Registration for The Back Forty also decreased from 300 last year (when we increased the maximum capacity after selling out very early) to 214 in 2025. This event continues to be a big success in terms of generating funds and attracting international participants as well as locals.
Our membership numbers fell from 1,895 last year to 1,589 this year. This was mostly due to the decrease in registrations for our events and youth camps. Despite this, we had a record number of returning members (940) in 2025, and our biggest challenge is attracting new members each year because of Whistler’s transient population.
Thank you very much to everyone that supported WORCA in 2025, whether it was as a member, donor, sponsor or volunteer. We look forward to seeing you out on the trails in 2026.
Sincerely,
Trevor Ferrao
