Extra curricular
We held our first Volunteer trail day of the fall this week and we were joined by a huge number of kids who’d been stuck behind a desk all week. They had energy to burn (perhaps thanks to Ben’s candy dispensing) and tools hit the ground in a frenzy! The steep hillside made benching more difficult than usual but the team of volunteers managed to get to the mineral soil and support the tread with ample rocks. Thanks go out to Coast Mtn Trail Running for sponsoring the dig!
After delicious BBQ’d smokies, the trail crew went back up to tackle some cruxes. “Big Rock Rob” was back to dig for another week! Michal, Reilly and Jacob started building an ambitious rock supported berm while Rob and I persuaded the trail through a bedrock spine. Later in the week, we welcomed some delegates from the Arct’eryx corporate conference to dig in the Nester’s zone. After hours of “conferencing”, they were like students at recess, eager to play. The project I selected for them was on the Myrtle Philip Feeder. Bridges there are aging (as wood eventually does) and Western Red Cedar in the area is scarce. So, we've opted for the longer lasting solution: Move the trail to higher ground. The wet nature of the area made for some advanced digging. There were bits of “gold” but it was mostly organic matter as we worked close to the high water line. We removed the worst segments of the bridge and the trail crew will be returning to that site before the snow flies to complete this segment.
enduro week
This week, we also made some last minute repairs to Flashback 2 and Rock Rabbit before the Witsend/Hillman enduros. A bridge off-ramp was fully rebuilt. With plenty of huge rocks to spare. Rob couldn’t let them sit unused, so we built up a nearby berm as well. We improved some drains, cleared ditches and culverts on top of limbing and pulling Cottonwoods and Alder that were encroaching on the trail line. Good luck to all the racers!
