Planning

As a recreational cycling organization in one of the best mountain biking destinations in North America, WORCA has an opportunity and a responsibility to help guide how mountain bike trails factor into the planning processes of our local government.  WORCA works closely with the Resort Municipality of Whistler to help ensure that rider’s interests are kept in mind when new development applications are brought forward.

WORCA is working hard to maintain our world class system of trails so that they’ll be there for riders like us to use for years to come.

Commerical Operators Policy

We at WORCA are repeatedly approached by Commercial Tour Operators in the valley who are asking how they can get involved with us or arrange the use of WORCA maintained trails in the valley.  Our response has been to create a Commercial Tour Operators Policy which we hope all Commercial Operators in the area will read.  We look forward to creating relationships with all trail users in the valley and are certain that we can establish some partnerships that are beneficial to WORCA members and the tourist community of Whistler.  To read our Policy, click here.

Provincial Trail Strategy

The Province of British Columbia has produced their own Trail Strategy.

“This Trails Strategy is intended to serve as the hub of a wheel connecting the broad range of organizations and initiatives that have historically worked independently, drawing them together in a shared vision to effectively and consistently develop and manage a world class B.C. trails network.”

Regional Trail Strategy

The Ministry of Tourism, Sport and the Arts has released their draft Sea to Sky Corridor Recreation Trail Strategy. Implementation of the strategy will be coordinated by a steering committee of representatives from MTSA, the SLRD and corridor local governments. A trails coordinator will be hired who will work closely with the clubs to authorize and establish trails throughout the corridor.

MoTSA Releases Strategic Plan

On October 16th, 2007 the Ministry of Tourism, Sport and the Arts released their strategic plan to manage mountain biking on Crown land, and there is plenty to be excited, and concerned, about. Although it recognizes the sport as legitimate, which is a major milestone for riders, it also places the onus of maintaining trails to provincial standards on clubs. To read the report, click here. The Future of Mountain Biking - Get your two cents in!

On October 5th, 2007, the Whistler Cycling Committee presented three draft plans, including a draft transportation plan, a draft recreation plan and a draft trails plan that looks at the current state of mountain biking in the community as well as opportunities for growth. This is a very big plan for WORCA, legitimizing existing trails and providing resources to build new trails and connectors throughout the valley.

The plan is currently being revised based on public input.  The WORCA Board of Directors submitted a document on behalf of our membership which outlines our comments about the plan.  To read the document click here.
