Ride with the WORCA Board - Tuesday June 2nd

  • Interested in meeting the WORCA Directors?
  • Do you have concerns or ideas related to WORCA you would like to talk over?
  • Are you considering volunteering for the board in the future and want to learn more about the positions?
  • Nothing to do on Tuesday evening and figure a group ride would be fun?

The WORCA Board of Directors meet on the first Tuesday of every month to discuss everything pertaining to WORCA and mountain biking in the Whistler Valley. We’d like to invite our members to join us for a fun group ride prior to our monthly meetings. This is your opportunity to meet the directors and chat with us about trail advocacy and planning issues, volunteer opportunities, trail maintenance projects, ideas for future events (including our upcoming 20th Anniversary celebrations), and/or anything else that’s been on your mind.

Our first ride will take place this Tuesday, June 2nd
Meet at 5:15 at Dusty’s, Creekside with the ride leaving at 5:30
Everyone is welcome!

We’ll see you at Dusty’s,

The WORCA Board of Directors

Share the Road

“The other day, I was fortunate enough to land myself in the clinic after bashing my shin against a rock. A relatively minor injury (especially considering it was bike park opening day). While sitting in the waiting room, a fellow rider was wheeled in on a stretcher, his neck in a brace. He was holding up his helmet examining a fresh crack. He had just been hit by a car.”

Even though Bike to Work week is over, with the weather improving, the number of riders on the roads in increasing. Please everyone, drivers and riders, take care and be aware.

Trail Sweep Update

Big THANK YOU to all Volunteers, that came out for our early season Trail sweeps. 25 WORCA members came out on the 16th and 20 on the 23rd. Further thanks to Bear Back Biking for their hands and also Ticket 2 Ride who came out 10 people strong over the two days and cleaned up the garbage in River Runs Through It. Do to the mild winter, we had little blow down to cut out and the sweep had been mostly completed on the first date. This past saturday, we transformed the sweep into a trail day and build 100m instead.

We appreciate the prompt trail reports from everyone, via our website. As the snow melts and more trails become accessible, we encourage all members to continue using our website to send trail reports. Let us know if you come across any blow down, major erosion, heavily overgrown trails or damaged stunts.

STAY TUNED, as more trail days will come up soon. One of the projects we will set a date for soon is connecting Shit Happens to Alpine again.

Trail Days

Our first trail day was a great success with 25 people coming out and 5 areas worked through: Tunnel Vision, Beaver Pass, the upper part of Lower Sproat, Cat Scratch Fever, and Emerald. Thanks to everyone for your hard work!

Our next trail day is scheduled for Saturday May 23rd. Meet at 8am at Riverside Café.
Please let us know if you will be able to attend by email at info@worca.com so we can plan how many breakfasts to prepare!

How it works:
The objective is to check all trails for their condition after the winter and trim back Branches, Bushes etc. After a WORCA sponsored breakfast, you will in your group walk a specific trail in the valley and perform the above tasks. You may show up as a single, pair or group. We will assign your team a trail to perform the tasks below.

Walk a trail and cut back branches and bushes. Check for any winter snow damage (erosion) also checks the bridges and stunts for damage. Record the location of all deadfall, which needs to be cut. Also record snow line if you could not walk farther. When you return home we request every Volunteer to send in a trail report on the WORCA website. This trail inventory is important to establish issues on specific Trails and cut out any trees fallen from the winter.

You should bring gardening shears, clippers or smaller portable saws, gardening gloves or old biking gloves and be ready ofor hiking damp trails. Some water and a snack are also a good idea you may be working between 2-3 hours.

Bike Swap a Success!

This year’s bike swap was a huge success and we’d like to thank everyone for coming out. We’re thrilled to announce we raised over $10,000 this year, all of which will go to WORCA’s youth mountain bike programs!

Special recognition goes out to:
Whistler Blackcomb for allowing us the use of the Creekside Base area and Dusty’s for letting us take over a corner of the restaurant.
Sabre Rentals for providing the fencing and tables.
Summit Sports for providing bike racks.
Bike mechanics James Barrett from The Fix and Greg from Summit Sports for giving complementary bike checks/services for newly purchased rides.
Phil Mowatt and the guys from Cycle Component Network for their excellent service.
And most importantly, the exceptional group of volunteers who worked hard all day ensuring everything ran smoothly!

For those who were unable to pick up their payouts on Sunday, remaining cheques will be available for pickup at the Thursday Toonie Ride sign in table. If you can’t make it, please email Anne at info@worca.com to make other arrangements.
