First Toonie Ride April 30th!
Come out and join WORCA for the first (official) ride of the season! The trails are still a little snowy so remember to stay safe and keep the etiquette guidelines in mind. This will be a fun ride to wake up our legs - and our lungs - and kick off another epic riding season!
Sign In: 5:30pm, across the street from the Lost Lake Ticket Booth
Ride: 6:30pm TBD
Après: at the Squamish Lillooet Cultural Center
Cost: $2.
WORCA memberships are required and are available online. Line ups get a little crazy at the beginning of the season so we’re encouraging everyone to save time and buy online!
Call for Volunteers
Artist, James Smith, won the latest Valley Trail public art competition with a proposal to create three ravens that will be displayed along the trail in the vicinity of the Whistler Golf Course halfway hut. The project will feature three ravens mounted in the adjacent landscape. His ravens involve a carved core with ‘feathers’ made of strips of recycled bicycle tires.
James Smith has proposed a public involvement process in early to mid May where 2-3 people can work together in attaching the ‘feathers.’ This involves using a power drill. Apart from being involved in the creation of the art and learning about this technique, the opportunity to work with a professional artist would be valuable. This may appeal to adults interested in art, or a parent and child combo. Contact Kevin McFarland at kmcfarland@whistler.ca for more information.
WORCA 2009 Membership Pricing
After an evaluation by the Board a decision was reached early this year to obtain our own insurance. Therefore we are no longer affiliated with Cycling BC, and as such, the insurance applies only to WORCA and WORCA events, so there will be no discounts for being affiliated with Cycling BC, or any other club. This move will save money for the club, allowing us to redirect those savings back into club activities, mainly our trail maintenance and youth programs.
2009 prices will remain at $40 for an individual membership, $90 for a family and $25 for a junior (18 or Under as of December 31, 2009).
The Fix Bike Maintenance Clinic
A great early season technical clinic on how to maintain and fix your bike!
The program for this clinic will include:
How to fix a flat (or how to fix a flat in under 5 minutes for those who already know how)
How to re-join a chain
How to tune derailleurs
How to adjust brakes
How to clean a bike without destroying it
And other general bike maintenance tips and handy tricks to get you out of a trail without a long walk.
We may schedule a second clinic that deals with more advanced concepts later.
The clinic will be held on May 12th starting at 6:30 at The Fix
Unit 1A-1006 Lynham Rd
Function Junction
$10 for WORCA members, including machine design souvenir by The Fix!
Bring a bike and a toolkit.
The clinic is now full, however, if you would like to go on a waiting list, please email info@worca.com and we’ll let you know if a spot becomes available!
Icon Gone – The WORCA Toonie Race
by Todd Hellinga
A WSSF 2009 Icon Gone Presentation
As I began to prepare for tonight, I was thinking about all the great photos I could use to illustrate my points, bringing them home in a hard hitting fashion….then I realized, to do that would likely embarrass, alienate, and implicate many friends and acquaintances in situations they may or may not recall, or want to recall! Being selfishly partial to those friendships and not wanting to be chased around by a surly mob of sweaty mountain bikers, threatening violence with handpumps, I thought better of it…hence my prop-free presentation this evening.
Tonight I bring forth something that I, and many others, see as the quintessential Whistler Icon. Not only because it brings 2-300 Whistler locals, and tourists, together EVERY Thursday night all summer (24 weeks straight), not only because it embodies health, fitness, being outdoors, and beer, (the pillars of Whistler), but also because it is a phenomenon that has existed in this town since before fat skis, twin tips, or the Dual Mountain. It has survived fluorescent spandex, 12-speed fully rigid bikes, and cantilever brakes.
Often emulated, but always in a league of its own, the format has been envied, and copied by clubs around the world, even the Nordic skiing freaks have adopted it to bring a year round community social event to the people. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Thursday night, biking, drinking, heartburning, leg straining, lung searing, mate seeking, social event of the week, WORCA’s famous, or infamous, Toonie Race! (more…)
Call for Trail Builders
With the upcoming Mountain Biking season coming up, we will get our trail maintenance program going again. WORCA invites Trail builders to apply for projects in the Whistler Valley.
Please email your CV to info@worca.ca.

More Details on Shirt Design Submissions!
We’ve actually had quite a bit of response from the community to our call for logo and shirt designs. We’ve been really fortunate to have been offered some pro-bono work from a local design company who are going to help us with some branding for the Anniversary. We are, however, still looking for designs for our shirts.
We were surprised by the response so we’ve had to simplify things! We’re going to leave the design up to you and have you submit something (or a few things) and then our board will select 3 designs to be represented on the shirts. If we love your design but it’s not quite right we will work with you to make it fit with our budget and ideas!
Parameters:
* The design must be one colour. Our shirts are coming in Black, Grey and Red. The design will likely be printed in Black, Grey or White (possibly red).
* The design must fit on the shirt as per the dimensions indicated in the PDF info sheet (posted here)
* The design does not have to incorporate the WORCA logo but should mention ‘20th Anniversary’ and ‘WORCA’ somewhere.
* Design can be submitted as a PDF but other formats may be necessary depending on printer preference.
The ‘prize’ for the winning designs will be i) the shirt, ii) a WORCA membership (refund if already paid!) and iii) $75 Cash Monies!
Designs should be subitted to Tracy May 4th 2009. We will select designs at our May 6th Board meeting and winners will be announced that week. We will then work with the winners to get the shirts printed up and begin selling them in early June.
