Phat Wednesday Wrap Up
Last night we wrapped up another great season of downhill racing with our final Kokanee Phat Wednesday of 2010. We followed tradition and ran a Chainless A-Line with costumed riders. Thanks to Sram for donating 120 free chains to the first racers to register. 180 men and women came out in all their finery and our fastest man of the night was Ian Morrison with a time of 3:22.84. On top of the Master Male podium was Mathieu Hebert with Sarah Leishman returning to the top of the women’s category and Ollie Gregory-Jones took the Junior Male category once again. A huge final après and awards show took place following the race at the GLC where prizes were given out for the best costumes, including gift certificates for the GLC. Many glacier fresh Kokanees were enjoyed by all.
This race also determined the Season Champions for the Kokanee Phat Wednesday Series. Each race points were awarded with 100 points for a first place finish, 80 for 2nd, 60 for 3rd and so forth. This year’s Champions are:

THANKS EVERYONE FOR AN AMAZING 2010!

Last week we returned to the Kokanee PhaSt Wednesday series with a tough course of Joyride, switching over to Schleyer at the rock garden to Lower Canadian Open. This was the most difficult course we have had this season and it showed with 9 of the 120 competitors not making it to the finish. Not to worry, there were no major injuries though. Once again, the fastest man of the night was Tyler Morland with a time of 2:40.21. at the top of the podium in the Masters category was Chris Dewar, a man not unfamiliar with this spot. Katrina Strand took top spot for the Females with a time of 3:25.48 and Ollie Gregory-Jones led the way in the Junior Male category. Once again all racing was celebrated with a cold Kokanee on the GLC patio.
This week we took the time to raise some funds for regular Phat Wednesday ripper Kari Mancer who suffered a broken back on July 25th while riding on Powder Mountain. All contributions will go towards the purchase of rehabilitation equipment (including a cruiser bike!). We held an auction selling off a set of Maxxis tires to Conrad Erickson for $150. Not fearing the more difficult terrain of Shleyer and Detroit Rock City, over 130 racers turned out to celebrate Canada Day with a race and a great after party at the GLC with a nice cold Kokanee and the band Whole Lotta Led. The great weather (in contrast to last weeks downpour and mud) brought out some of Whistler’s best riders. June 24 Phat Wednesday Results
The first Kokanee Phat Wednesday report for the season!
From Whistler Blackcomb:
So all to say, we kick off the season under some pretty wet conditions last night with rains coming and coming and a course that got very muddy and slick. As per tradition (at least appears that way), the event was held on B Line and regardless of the weather over 160 competitors came out to test their skills on what turned out to be a challenging evening with the rain and the slippery conditions.
A change this year in our categories that seemed to work quite nicely, with nearly 35 competitors in this category, was the fact that we brought the age down to 30 years and above for the Masters Category (instead of 35).
All other categories remained the same as our Junior Male had a showing of 11 competitors, our female category had nearly 20 competitors which is always great to see and once more to quick off the season, we had 100 participants in the Open Male group.
Once more, all these events wouldn’t be possible without all our partners Kokanee,Worca and the GLC and all our sponsors such as:
Sram : Winning a Full drive train was Cory Thornton
Giro : Winning a Full Face helmet was Josh Lyons
Other draw prizes included :
- Set of Brakes thanks for Hayes
- Giro clothing
- Fox gear
- Garbanzo bike and bean clothing
The next event will be held next on July 1st, the first of 3 new PhaSt Wednesday event where the goal is to test the ability of the riders by having the events held on more technically challenging run in the park. Registration will be happening as per usual on the Garbanzo Bike and Bean Patio starting @ 5pm with the race starting near 6pm. The event will be followed by the awards held in the GLC.
Take care and see you at the next event. One last thing, trail on which the events will take place will be posted at the bottom of the bike park a few days ahead of the event.
1st Phat Wednesday June 24th!
Come out this Wednesday for the 1st Phat Wednesday DH Race! Everyone is welcome to take part, from youth riders to casual riders to hardcore park rats.
