Tunnel Vision Trees Thinned to Reduce Wildfire Risk
Watch during this week’s Loonie for the recently-thinned section near the bottom of Tunnel Vision, next to Kadenwood Road. Smaller trees were cut and removed from the site, then shipped to the composting facility. With the addition of thinning on either side of the Kadenwood ski-out, 750 metric tonnes (150 huge truckloads) of brush were removed, a total which represents six week’s supply for the composting process.
Much of the lower valley in Whistler has similar forests to those around Tunnel Vision. These 40-60 year-old, extremely dense and dark stands are targetted for “fuels reduction,” that is, cutting and removal of smaller trees to reduce the flammability of the stand. Such treatments can also provide better wildlife habitat by speeding the development of mature and older stand conditions.
Comments and suggestions about this and future wildfire treatments are welcome. Please contact Fire Chief Rob Whitton (rwhitton@whistler.ca).
